An earthquake which occurred in southern Taiwan during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday has damaged several undersea fiber optic cables in this region.
These damages have caused serious disruptions of telecommunication services in some Southeast Asian countries including Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, China and Japan. Consequently, connectivity with Europe and the United States suffered from enormous congestion.
Our Internet Service Provider in Hong Kong has also been affected, thus disturbing Internet services of Telecom Plus and My.T.
Telecommunications operators concerned promptly undertook repair works to have the situation back to normal. Cable-laying ships have been sent on sites for repairs. Due to the extensive damage, repair works will take several days. Internet connection with Hong Kong will gradually get back to normal progressively as repairs are being done.
In the meantime, Mauritius Telecom has diverted most Internet traffic from Hong Kong to the west segment of SAFE cable and through a satellite connection.
Nevertheless, Internet service in Mauritius may experience some partial slowness, particularly during peak hours.
Mauritius Telecom wishes to assure the public that its international call service has not, at any moment, been affected by the Southeast Asian disaster.
Mauritius Telecom and Telecom Plus apologize for any inconvenience caused and rely on your kind understanding.
