1 Orange ADSL



1.1 what is ADSL?


ADSL refers to the fast speed at which you can surf & download online.


We say that ADSL is a 'best effort' service and mention "up to" 'given speed' because the speed you actually get varies with:

1.2 what do I need?




1.3 what are the eligibility criteria for the service?


You are eligible for broadband depending on the quality of your telephone line and how far you are from the exchange.

Call us on 8900 for your home connection or on 8901 for your business connection, to find out if your line is eligible for ADSL.


1.4 do I need to have any special electrical /electronic adaptor or plug?


No. You will only have to ensure that an electrical socket with a good earth is available for connecting a modem.


1.5 do I need additional telephone wiring to get the service?


If your telephone line is next to your PC, you do not need additional telephone wiring.
If your PC is at a significant distance, you can request MT for additional wiring. Chargeable cabling services are available as follows:

1.7 how do I register for Orange ADSL ?


Call us on 8900 for your home connection and on 8901 for your business connection to find out whether your line is eligible for the service.

You can download an application form from www.orange.mu and visit any of our Shops to register for the service.

In order for us to complete your registration please provide:


1.8 what are the available speed for surfing?


ADSL is available at 256kbps, 512kbps, 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps, 4Mbps


1.9 what is internet data volume?


Internet data volume is the total amount of data you transfer ( mails, web pages,
music, movie files). It includes download and upload data.


1.10 what can I download with 3GB of volume?


With 3GB internet data volume in a month, you can get:


1.11 Can I track my internet usage?


Go to My Internet Account on http://www.orange.mu/my-account to check your internet usage online. You will need to enter your ADSL login and password.

Yes, you can have internet access simultaneously on more than 1 PC and laptop.
However, your surf experience ie. speed on each PC will depend on the ADSL package you have subscribed to.


2 Orange Dial Up



2.1 what is Dial Up internet access?


Orange Dial Up internet access is a connection to the internet via the telephone line using a modem.


2.2 what do I need to use Dial Up?


All that you need is a modem and a telephone line. Most computers today come with a 56K modem. You may also use an external modem.


2.3 do I need to have any special electrical /electronic adaptor or plug?


No. You will only have to ensure that an electrical socket with a good earth is provided for connecting a modem.


2.4 do I need additional telephone wiring to get the service?


If your telephone line is next to your PC, you do not need additional telephone wiring.
If your PC is at a significant distance, you can request MT for additional wiring.

2.5 what is the fastest speed available on Dial Up?


Modern Dial-Up modems typically have a maximum of 56 Kbps (using the V.92 protocol), although in most cases only up to 53 Kbps is possible due to overhead.

In many cases transfer speeds will be lower, averaging anywhere between 33-43 Kbps.

The connection speed may vary depending on factors such as phone line noise and condition plus the quality of the modem itself.

The speed of connection can be accelerated through the use of a web accelerator. Our Dial Up service is accelerated and provides for up to 5 times the connection speed of Pay As You Go.


2.6 what are the charges for Orange Dial Up?


You can choose our Pay As You Go to suit your internet communication needs.

Pay As You Go means no monthly rental; you pay only for connection charges at rates below.

2.8 how do I connect to the internet using PAYG?


Install your dialler as explained in question 2.9 below.

To connect to the internet, click on your web browser, your dialler will pop up and you will have to enter your username and password as follows:



2.9 how do I create a dialler?


i. I am using Pay As You Go

Windows 95/98 :
  1. From My Computer open up Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Click on Make New Connection
  3. Type in 'Orange' as your ISP connection name.
  4. Type in the ISP phone number 3121212. No area code is required for Mauritius.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. You will now see your new connection. Right-click on it and select Create a shortcut and then select Yes to make a shortcut on the desktop.
  7. Open up the connection and type in your username and password.

Win XP:
  1. Open up Control Panel
  2. Click on Network Connections.
  3. Select on "New connection wizard". There may be some situations where this option is not available. If the arrows to the right of Network Tasks are pointing down, then click on them and they will point up and the option will become available. Under other circumstances there will be no options on the left. In that case click on the File drop-down-menu and then select New Connection.
  4. Choose Next.
  5. Choose the first option, "Connect to the internet".
  6. Choose the second option, "Set up my connection manually".
  7. Choose the first option, "Connect using a Dial-Up modem".
  8. Type in 'Orange' as your ISP name. Some people prefer to take the check mark out of the third box, "Turn on internet Connection Firewall for this connection." Take the check mark out of the second box, "Make this default internet connection" if you usually use another connection or usually use this computer for DSL.
  9. Put a check mark in, "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" .
  10. If you are ready to dial now click on Dial. Otherwise choose Cancel
  11. This new connection can either be accessed under the Dial-Up section in Network Connections or via the shortcut on the desktop.


ii. I have an existing Orange Dial Up package

You have been given an Orange Dial Up installation upon subscription.

Insert the CD in your PC/Laptop. The software will guide you to install your dialler as well as a web booster.

You will need to have the following at hand to insert when requested by the software:


Follow the instructions, insert the above information when requested. When you click on 'Finish', your dialler and web booster will be ready to use.

If you need any assistance for configuring your dialler on your home line, call us on 8900 and for your business line, call 8901

2.10 how do I connect to the internet?


Click on you short cut (Orange icon) to your Orange Dial Up connection. Enter the username and password provided on your subscription form.


2.11 what happens if I cannot recall my username or my password?


Go to any of our Orange Shops with your ID and we'll provide you with your login details.


2.12 what is a web accelerator/booster?


An "accelerated Dial-Up" or "Dial Up with a booster" is a form of dial-up access that utilizes the newer modem standard v.92 to shorten the log-on (or handshake) process, and then once a connection has been established the provider will selectively compress, filter, and cache data being sent to the users home.

The overall effect is that your Dial Up speed for browsing most standard web pages is increased.


2.13 how can I benefit from a boosted Dial Up access?


If you are already subscribed to our Dial Up packages without booster, contact us to include the booster to your Orange Dial Up service. There is no additional charge.

You can also download the booster from here or collect a CD from any of our Orange Shops.


2.14 how do I set up Orange as my homepage?


On internet Explorer (versions 5.0 and 6.0)
Netscape (Versions 6.x and 7.x)

2.15 how many computers can I connect with my existing Orange Dial Up account?


You can connect as many computers to the internet as you like using your Orange Dial Up account, but unless your computers form part of a local area network (LAN), only one computer will be able to connect at a time.

If you want to connect multiple computers to the internet at the same time and you don't have a LAN, then you will need to connect each computer to a different phone line, and you will need to obtain separate login accounts for each computer.


2.16 when I dial in, it says that my username or password is invalid but I know they are correct. What is going on?

2.17 I have a 56K modem. why isn't my download speed even close to 56K?


Some of the factors that determine your computer's performance include amongst others,

So no 56K modem ever connects at 56K. Most 56K modem users seem to connect at speeds of 44-48Kbps.


2.18 why do I keep losing my internet connection?


There are several reasons why this may be happening, the most frequent of which is phone line noise. If you usually hear crackles, pops, noise and any other kind of interference when you are using your phone line, then this corroborates that your phone line is noisy.

2.19 Why do I normally get a very good connection speed but downloads from some sites are quite slow?


There are a number of factors that can affect this:


2.20 my telephone line is not too good. will this affect the performance of Dial Up service with booster?


Phone line problems may affect your connection to the internet, causing disconnections or slow speeds. This could as a consequence affect the performance of your accelerated Dial Up service.

2.21 I can log on to the internet and send email, but I cannot see any web sites. what's wrong?


If you receive 'Page cannot be displayed' or 'Server cannot be found' errors you should first verify that you are connected to the internet:

In Windows: check the Windows system tray (the area by the clock) for the connection icon. The connection icon should look like two monitors. These monitors blink when information is sent and received over the connection.

If you have verified that your computer is connected to the internet, but you are still unable to load any web pages or check your email, try deleting and recreating the connection to Orange Dial Up in your Dial-up networking folder.


2.22 what happens if I have not used all the minutes from my existing Dial Up package in a month?


With the 'carry forward' feature on Orange Dial Up, the minutes not consumed from your Dial Up package will be carried over to the next months.

The number of minutes to be carried forward to the next month may not exceed the duration of your Orange Dial Up package.

The 'carry forward' feature is not available on the 3H Dial Up offer.

If you were previously subscribed to a Servihoo package and do not benefit from this feature, contact us on 8900 to change your package to Orange Dial Up.


2.23 how can I check my internet consumption?


To check how much of time you used from your package, go to My Internet Account on www.orange.mu and enter your login details.

You will be able to view your internet sessions and the duration left on your package for the month.


2.24 can I use my username and password on my friend's telephone line?


Yes, if you are subscribed to existing Orange Dial Up package. Our number portability feature allows you to use your username and password on your friend's telephone line and the charging will be done on your telephone line.

2.25 why is it important to keep your username and password secret?


When your username and password are used on a line other than yours, the internet consumption will be billed on your account and telephone line. It is important that you keep your account details secret!


3 Orange mail



3.1 what happens to my email account @intnet.mu?


Wanadoo ADSL has now become Orange ADSL and Servihoo has become Orange Dial-Up. Your tariff plans and emails remain the same. However if your present email is yourname@intnet.mu you can also use your email yourname@orange.mu.


3.2 do I have an email account with an existing Orange Dial Up?


Yes. All Orange Dial Up packages include a free email account.

Upon subscription to an existing package, you will be provided with your username and password for your email account.


3.3 what is POP3 mail?


A POP3 email account retrieves your emails from a remote server at Orange (the POP3 email server) over an internet connection.


3.4 how do I create my email account on my computer?

Open Outlook Express.

Click on Tools on the menu bar.

3.7 what is the capacity of my mailbox with an orange.mu mail account?


With an existing Orange Dial Up and Orange ADSL packages you get mailboxes of capacity of 25MB.

3.8 can I increase my mailbox capacity?


Yes. You can subscribe to the option "250MB Capacity" at Rs 25/month excl. VAT.


3.9 can I purchase additional mailboxes?


You can get an additional mailbox of 100MB capacity at Rs 25 month excl. VAT.

is my mailbox protected against viruses and spam?

We provide anti-virus and anti-spam on all our mail services.

However you can increase the level of protection against viruses and spasm on your mailbox by subscribing to our Anti-virus/Anti-spam service.

You will get a higher level of protection and get reports online on mails blocked due to suspected spam and virus.

The Anti-virus/anti-spam feature costs Rs 25/ month excl. VAT for one mailbox.


3.10 how can I get notified when new mails arrive in my mailbox?


By subscribing to SMS notification service at Rs 25/month excl VAT, you will get an SMS whenever an email arrives in your mailbox.

You can decide whose emails you require notification for. You can configure your SMS notification on the Orange Email interface accordingly.

If you are subscribed to this service, go to your email account on www.orange.mu . Open your mailbox. Click on SMS notification. You create rules based on sender's address and subject for which you require notification.


3.11 can I increase my mailbox capacity, get notifications and increased protection against viruses and spam at the same time?


You can subscribe to one, two or three of the enhanced services we propose. The tariffs are given in table below.
